I'm with you on this on, Rave. Part of me really thinks that to believe we're the ONLY planet ever to have life is really arrogant. Now, that's not to say that aliens really descend down to Earth and scoop us out of our beds every night (though part of me really loves the idea of that). That's not to say they're more advanced than us or less advanced than us either. They could be cavemen on another planet in another universe or they could be jetpack-wearing people with lazer guns... since I believe there is more than one world, that also means that there are probably other races (which have evolved entirely differently or exactly the same. who knows?) in those alternate dimensions.
One thing I'm certain of; SOMEDAY (whether in my lifetime or in another) two races are going to meet each other. Whether they are invading us... or we are invading them is a whole other question I'm really scared to wonder about. I can all too easily see humans going through an intergalactic Civil War.

'Rave'? Okay, not bad... 'Rave'. I wondered how long it would take for someone to give me a nickname for my nickname.

Erm, yeah. That would be like thinking your the only one on earth worthy of driving a new Ford merely because you are driving a new Ford. Very arrogant.

Good. The last thing I need is to turn over on night and see some higher lifeform than I with a net and tranqilizer.
I like the idea as a writer, but I really doubt that it happens. I mean, maybe once in a blue moon, to some degree, but I doubt it.

*somewhere on another planet* "Okay, Wilma, get the kids, we're going to Dino's Diner to get a bronto burger..."
Sorry, couldn't help it..
And you're right. They could be parasite eating monkeys for all we know... Damned dity apes...
Wait a minute...

Seriously, (I'm hyper all of a sudden) It would make sense that there are several different kinds of aliens at different stages of development. With so many other stars and systems...

Why do either of us have to invade? It's certainly possible that we'll meet peacefully.

I believe that the idea of the human race invading a less technologically developed race is highly probable. If one were to take a gander at what the English, French, Russians, and Spanish (and more) did to the Native American population here in the Americas, one would hopefully come to the conclusion that as a race, humans are highly warlike and thrive (yes, I say thrive) on destruction. Have we ever gone more than 50 years without a single war?
I believe with all my heart that aliens are real. Perhaps, as previously stated, not in this system (and I dare not say Solar system as that is the name of our system and not that of others. A bit of trivia for today! LOL) but certainly out there... somewhere. Perhaps in a Galaxy Far, Far Away... After all, Space is the Final Frontier.

Unforunately, Rabid, I find myself agreeing. I could see mankind rising up and invading somewhere, then getting in far too deep and destroying themselves. Sort of like 'Starship Troopers', only with a more organized military force.
lol
But honestly, humanity has never taken kindly to those we deem 'different' or 'unusual.' To this day, people with certain diseases, illnesses or condisions are seen as strange and have difficulty finding work, not to mention a place to live and build a 'normal' life. How would we react to another sentient race? The thought is frightening. I imagine that we have more to fear from ourselves than we do them.
But at the same time, I can only guess that a race simular to our own would be a great threat. If humanity, for all it's years on Earth, is still as warlike as it ever was, and has advanced it's weaponry so far (in so little time, look at the last fifty to a hundred years), think of what a more advanced race might be able to do to a race like humanity, which is easily torn apart by different beliefs and morals.
It's be like stepping on cockroaches. We wouldn't be able to agree on what the heck we should do.

I enjoyed that movie when it came out. LOL.

Indeed the thought is frightening. Could you imagine in, say, two hundred years, when the world (as I believe it just might) advances into space, suddenly, and unexpectedly, comes in contact with a sentient race of people who are absolutely harmless, but appear frightening? Humanity would fall into panic. B-rated movies would instantly begin production and blow things out of proportions. Authors' imaginations would begin to soar and suddenly we have future-generation Stephen Kings writing things about this new race destroying us all. And all the while, these people are completely harmless. Then, we get some hot shot President (or however our government should be ran) who decides he's going to pull Galactic Police and attack these people because of the mass panic that society is already in.....
....I'm sorry, I think I've forgotten what I was talking about. It has been a long day. LOL
Anyways, what I was intending to say was actually quite simple: Humanity blows things out of proportion, and when that happens, humanity blows things up. Our imaginations sometimes get the best of us (as I clearly have just demonstrated LOL) and not always for the better.

Really? I didn't care for it. The military forces, when it came to tactics and organization sucked, and there were too many naked people. lol Eh, but to each his own, right?

I doubt it will take two hundred years, although, with NASA being as foolish as it is, unadvanced and set in it's ways, more or less just getting by, it's cetainly possible.
Of course, the Twilight Zone warned us years ago about the kinds of things that just could happen should we ever meet an 'alien' race. Have you ever seen the show? Classic sci-fi, but it made some awesome points about humanity and the way we act and react.

It happens. I do it often, lol.

Very true indeed. While I believe in the power of observation and naked fact, between the blinding media and the rumors that can spread through a community like wildfire, it's hard to know what the truth really is, especially with something like the event of humanity meeting another race. I mean, people gossip about other humans like their from another world, imagine how they'd be chatting about folks who really are from another planet.

I was much younger, so the blood and guts drew me in. LOL. Looking at it now though, and you're absolutely right.

It was a quick-thought guess. Personally, I'd love to see colonies on the moon before I die. Although a part of me says: We've screwed up this world enough! Why go to another and do the same? That would make an interesting sci-fi story.... though, not like it hasn't been done a million and one times, right? Heh.

I've only seen small parts of the show, and that was quite a while ago. Stargate was my preference when I had the Sci-fi channel..... and B-rated bug-movies. LOL

Precisely what I was intending to say. The human imagination is a unending and more often than not, elaborate and excited when in search for an answer to a particularly hard question or problem. Meeting a foreign species of sentient creatures would certainly cause the mind to go into over-drive for some, and then those nasty rumors that we've all be a subject of start to circulate. Next thing you know, WAR! Why? Because people are afraid. When you boil it down. People are just afraid.
Oh, more rambling. I should learn to keep my mouth shut! LOL.

Thanks, lol. And yeah, it did have a bucket load of gore in it. Not as bad as it could have been, but then again... *twitch*

Ben Bova wrote a book arguing that it ought to be done. I've never read it, and it's out of print now, but I saw one at work not too long ago. It didn't hang around long, but it certainly looked interesting.

Too bad. It's a great program. If I could afford it, I'd have it on DVD. *wishes*

*reads* Yes, I read all of this but don't directly connect my theories to any of it and they are sometimes influenced by what I read here but I better be quiet seeing as I just joined yesterday.
I do think there is life out there, be they humans or not and the fact that we only want to find 'intelligent' life is apalling. If we find outer life or aliens that look different, act different, and communicate differently are going to deem them 'unintelligent' because we don't understand and they're different. It seems to me that with the government systems of the world that would be the case.
On the note of why I believe in them, it is, once again, for religion reasons. Seriously, if GOD created Earth, who's to say he didn't create other worlds too and who can prove that these others don't visit Earth time to time? Angels and demons do it, come to Earth I mean, so why can't other life do it?

Hey, Bob, you're on a discussion site. Never try to be quiet, always try to be well spoken, but never quiet. As long as your stating your opinion in a nice, polite tone with respect to others, dude, go for it.
I like the point you made, connecting this topic with religion. I mean, if God is all mighty, why would he limit himself to one world and one system?
Of course, many religous folks wouldn't care for the idea. After all, man was made in God's image. It'd be awfully weird if we met Klingons who assumed that the same was true for them. lol.
Seriously, that's an interesting angle. I'll have to give it some more thought.
